Most insurers request that you let them know as soon as is practical that there's an issue that's arisen that might result in a claim. Different claims will need to be handled in different ways but you might need to get documentation to support your claim from the police or a hospital. We'd recommend that you speak to your insurance provider before incurring any costs that you'd want to reclaim. That way they can give you instruction on their process.
